The
Katy Trail
Katy Trail Overview
The
Katy Trail State Park is a 225 mile rail trail located in
St. Charles, Missouri. The trail goes from Clinton, Mo east
to St. Charles, Mo. near St. Louis.
The Katy
Trail is a great ride! It is mostly flat and the surface of
crushed limestone is solid except during heavy downpours.
The trail has great views along the Missouri River and passes
through many types of unique terrain. There is much wildlife
to see as well.
The Katy
Trail is the previous rail bed for the Missouri-Kansas-Texas
Rail Road (M-K-T, or "Katy"). Between St. Charles
and Boonville, The Katy Trail is an official segment of the
Lewis and Clark National Historic Trail.
The trail
can be used for simple day bike rides or multi-day biking
events traversing the entire trail from Clinton to St. Charles.
For longer trips or emergencies, there are number of independently
owned Katy Trail shuttle services.
The trail
is challenging for multi-day rides, but well worth the effort.
There are many places along the route for lodging and meals,
but be sure to pack extra water and food just in case. This
is especially true during the Summer months.
There
are plans to open 11 additional miles from St. Charles to
Machen in 2007-2008.
